What it is
MicroLED is a direct-view LED display technology defined by the size of its LED dies — under roughly 100 µm, against about 100-200 µm for MiniLED — rather than by pixel pitch; in video walls it is typically found at sub-millimetre pitches, with the finest commercial products at about P0.4-P0.6 in 2026. Each pixel is an individually addressable inorganic LED, with no backlight, no liquid crystal, and no bezels between modules.
What it changes for video walls
- No seams — assemble any canvas shape with no LCD bezel grid. The wall becomes one continuous surface.
- 96% BT.2020 colour gamut against ~70% for typical professional LCDs. Demands a 10- or 12-bit colour pipeline in the controller to avoid banding.
- ~100,000 hour lifetime (vs ~50,000 for LCD), with the corresponding total-cost-of-ownership shift on 24/7 deployments.
- Brightness headroom — indoor fine-pitch walls are rated from roughly 800 nits upwards, and control rooms usually run them well below 1,000 nits for operator comfort; 10,000-nit brightness belongs to outdoor signage, not to sub-millimetre walls.
The price curve in 2026
MiniLED dies serve two markets: as backlights in MiniLED LCDs, whose price premium over conventional LCD has narrowed sharply since 2022, and as the pixels of fine-pitch direct-view walls. Walls marketed as MicroLED at P0.9-P1.5 (most use MiniLED-size dies) are priced like fine-pitch dvLED — roughly €4,000-8,000/m² at 0.9 mm and €2,500-4,000/m² at 1.2-1.5 mm — while true MicroLED at 0.4-0.6 mm costs about €15,000-25,000+/m², and LCD remains the cheapest option.
What the software has to do
- Per-pixel calibration — colour and brightness vary panel to panel; the controller has to compensate.
- Non-standard canvas resolutions — MicroLED walls do not snap to 1080p / 4K grids. EDID handling has to accept arbitrary dimensions on the fly.
- Power and thermal telemetry — modules expose current draw and temperature. The controller can dim adaptively to extend module life.
Pitfalls when speccing
Pitch and viewing distance go together: a P0.9 wall is overkill at 5+ metres viewing distance, where P1.5 looks identical and costs considerably less. Specify pitch against the actual operator-to-wall distance, not against a spec-sheet "we can do P0.6".
