24/7 video wall software: sources that recover by themselves and a standby server

Every source runs in its own process

Streams, web pages, documents and remote desktops each run in a separate process. If one fails, only its window is affected; the others keep running.

A supervisor watches every source. It notices a dead process at once and a stalled picture within seconds.

Failed sources restart on their own

The supervisor restarts a failed source with growing pauses, from one second to thirty, and then keeps probing every five minutes.

A window keeps its place, size and layer while its source recovers.

Before each restart the supervisor checks free GPU memory, so a recovery cannot take the wall down.

The wall returns after a restart

Windows, scenes and sources are stored in a database on the server, together with the address, zoom and scroll position of web pages.

After a reboot or an update the wall comes back in its last state. If one display output freezes, only that wall is rebuilt.

A hot standby server

For rooms that require redundancy, add a second, identical server. Both render the same picture; the active one accepts operator changes and passes the configuration to the standby.

The servers exchange signed heartbeats twice a second. When the active server has been silent for about three seconds, the standby takes the active role and switches the display path to itself.

While it is passive, the standby refuses changes, so operators cannot edit two copies.

Updates without surprises

Updates are signed and start only when an administrator installs them.

If the health check fails after an update, the previous version is restored automatically.

Test it in your proof of concept

Recovery depends on your sources, network and display path. Measure it in the agreed configuration.

• Disconnect a camera and reconnect it.
• Stop the server behind a dashboard and start it again.
• Reboot the Craft Wall server and check the scene on the wall.
• Power off the active server if a standby is in scope, and time the switch-over including your display path.
