Pixel pitch

Last updated: 2026-05-17

The centre-to-centre distance between adjacent pixels on a display, in millimetres — the single number that drives minimum viewing distance for a direct-view LED video wall.

What it is

Pixel pitch is the physical distance from the centre of one pixel to the centre of the next, measured in millimetres. A "P1.5" display has a 1.5 mm pitch; a "P0.9" display has 0.9 mm. The number is most often quoted for direct-view LED and MicroLED walls, where it varies across more than an order of magnitude and drives both price and viewing distance.

How it works

Smaller pitch packs more pixels into the same surface area, which raises the native resolution of the wall and reduces the minimum distance at which an individual viewer can no longer resolve the pixel grid. The common rule of thumb is pitch (mm) × 2.5 to 3 = minimum comfortable viewing distance (metres) for a viewer with 20/20 vision. A P1.5 wall works from about 3.75-4.5 m; a P0.9 wall works from about 2.25-2.7 m; a P2.5 wall wants 6.25-7.5 m.

Why it matters

Pitch is the dominant cost driver in DV-LED procurement. Halving the pitch roughly quadruples the LED count per square metre and roughly triples the per-square-metre cost. Specifying a smaller pitch than the room geometry actually requires is one of the most common procurement overspends in control- room projects. See the MicroLED entry for why sub-millimetre pitch only makes sense when the viewer is within ~2 m and the budget supports it.

Common pitfalls

  • Specifying pitch from the closest possible viewer position rather than the typical operating position — optimises for the corner case and inflates the budget.
  • Comparing pitch across manufacturers without checking refresh rate, contrast, and viewing angle — pitch alone is not a complete spec.
  • Mixing pitches across a single wall in a refresh project — humans see the seam between, say, P1.5 and P1.9 even when each panel is in-spec individually.
