A coordinated array of displays driven by a single processor so that any source can occupy any region of the combined canvas.
What it is
A video wall is a tiled array of two or more displays (LCD, LED, rear-projection, or direct-view LED) that a single controller treats as one logical canvas. Sources — cameras, dashboards, documents, video conferences, RDP sessions — can be placed in arbitrary regions, resized, and layered on top of each other, all driven by software rather than hard- wired routing.
How it works
Modern software video walls run on commodity x86 servers with one or more GPUs. The OS sees the panels as a single extended desktop; the controller composites every active source into that desktop in real time. Failed sources self-recover without operator intervention. Compare with the older "matrix switcher + dedicated controller" approach: same outcome, but the bottleneck is software, not silicon.
Why it matters
Operators in critical environments watch 15–20 dashboards at once. A video wall promotes the right source to the centre of attention at the right moment, lets several operators share one operational picture, and reduces the cognitive cost of context switching. Common pitfalls
- Treating the wall as wallpaper — without a control workflow, operators never reach for it.
- Hardware-only controllers cap source count at the silicon limit; software walls scale with GPU memory.
- Underestimating bezel-correction and colour-matching for LCD arrays — both need calibration on day one.
